The Weight

June 17th, 2019

I've been on a long lifestyle change regime. It probably started about 15 years ago. At that time I was still smoking but also taking supplements like vitamins and anti-oxidants. It dawned on me one day that the cigarettes and anti-oxidants were in direct conflict with each other. They both need to be bought with money so I opted to quit smoking and keep taking the vitamins and anti-oxidants. Kudos to me, right?

Well of course it was a sensible health driven decision. However quitting smoking for many has one bad side effect-you eat more! That was true for me and I bulked up over an already bulky physique. So not long after I decided to go walking as often as possible in the early AM. Good idea-every little bit counts. I also was getting into photography around this time so I brought the camera with me. Kill 2 birds with one stone, right? Get some needed healthy exercise and use the time to take some photos as well.

This was my norm for a couple of years. I noticed some gradual slight weight loss but many friends didn't so much. I thought about this and realized that it was best to use the time for more brisk walking, uninterrupted by looking for and taking photos. While this decreased my photo taking it certainly enhanced the benefit of the walking to me and my enhanced focus on taking better care of my body.

So let's update to present times. I've lost a little over 100 lbs and around 9" off of my waistline. I was just at a wedding (wife's family) and many that hadn't seen me in a few years were all surprised and very encouraging about my obvious weight loss. So you might be asking yourself why am I writing this? Is this just another narcissistic, self congratulatory social media post? Maybe but I hope to encourage anyone reading this that has a challenge that you can make progress and probably be successful if you are patient and practical. Many will offer that the weight didn't go on over night so it won't come off over night either. Yes, everyone prefers speed loss over slow and steady but slow and steady is the healthier sustainable choice in terms of limiting stress to your body but still achieving good results.

The net result is I'll still continue to walk for an hour and 1/2, 4 or 5 times a week at 4 something o'clock each morning. I'll also continue to eat sensibly-which to me means less carbs but not no carbs. Definitely less processed sugar-and less food simply because my appetite has decreased. Let me know how your lifestyle goals are going and I'll send you some love and encouragement!

And Where Do We Go From Here?

November 3rd, 2017

I love how song lyrics get trapped in your head like detritus in the drain of your sink. You can hear it, it is very visceral but still a little ephemeral as you try to focus on it and remember from which song. Bingo-this one is David Essex's Rock On. I feel compelled to leave link for the song at the bottom of the post so just click on it to hear the song. Even though he was not one of the full blown leaders of the glamour or glitter rock movement like T-Rex's Marc Bolan or David Bowie I feel Rock On was a good capsule for that flavor and moment in time. The psyche radar of ear, mind and soul never disappoint. Culture subliminally baptizing us. Most of the time we don't even notice getting wet.

I remember when Predator was another fun action sci-fi escapist Arnold Schwarzenegger movie. My favorite line was Jesse "the Body" Ventura's, "I aint't got time to bleed" line. Good visual ham and scene chewing with decent special effects for the time:1987. Same year I came to Taiwan actually. Unfortunately, in the last few weeks there has been much attention on predators-the sexual variety. The Fox News people, our current POTUS, movie mogul-Harvey Weinstein, and now Kevin Spacey have all been accused of sexually preying on the innocent, vulnerable and naive of both the hetero and homosexual variety. The irony quotient here is off the charts-most mentioned here were lousy actors/pop stars that leveraged there fame into a political career or that played powerful political men on TV or the internet. God help us...

So where is the news here? Our current reality is very much like Paddy Chayefsky's Network  a surreal overlap of the normal and the absurd served to you via the nightly news. Like Janes addiction's 1st big album: Nothing's Shocking's "Ted, Just Admit It's" :

The T.V.'s got them images
T.V.'s got them all
It's not shocking!
Every half an hour
Someone's captured and
The cop moves them along...
It's just like the show before
The news is
Just another show
With sex and violence...

Sex is violent...
Sex is violent...
Sex is violent...
Sex is violent...
Sex is violent...
Sex is violent...
Sex is violent!

How very prescient and on point for our current media reality/reality which is a looping vortex of reality tv; which is tv comprised of fake news and factoids and was the stepping stone for our current POTUS' enhanced fame and  clearly helped him along the path to becoming the Figure Head in Chief. If I sound callous please forgive me. I don't believe I'm cynical just jaded. This never ending "daymare" of the news/media cycle and "Tweetmobbing" can easily burn out even the most resilient among us.

In summary, those that are guilty hopefully will get justice, treatment and a chance at redemption. For the real victims hopefully they'll receive closure and healing. Sadly some of the guilty and the victims will find a way to capitalize on this politically and/or commercially because as Earth, Wind and Fire sang" "That's the Way of the World"

This shot was from a few months back. It was a good trip. Father and son time down in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. We went there to shoot product videos. This was towards end of my solo roam through Kaohsiung downtown while son slept in hotel. Love to explore cities like that before dawn and the crack of dawn. This is in a McDonald's inside of the Kaohsiung terminal. It seems my son wasn't the only one still sleeping 😀

On the way back to Taichung we took a trip over to EDa World an impressive site of Las Vegas proportions and flash. really well done in the middle of nowhere kind of. I guess it has to be to secure the amount of land at a reasonable price to build something of such epic scale. University, shopping mall, gold resort and amusement park all on the one site. big score for me because out of all the failed sneaker shopping in the huge outlet mall it was only my last chance quest at the Swoosh store where I found 4 pair in my hard to find size 13. The only one I really likedI bought. Major serendipity finding nice kicks in my size anywhere, especially Taiwan and even more on point at that mall.

Social Media Dilution

September 7th, 2015

The meaning of the title...blah, blah, blah. Yes because of social media sites I devote much less time to this site. That being said it's still mine to ignore abuse or adore as I please. I hope you still stop by and kick the tires from time to time. I've been listening to so much less music than I used to do back in the day. That being said, I'm viewing far more moving media(small screen in this case) than before. Also shooting and editing more photos and still playing my guitar whenever I think of it. The flow of information, the associated value the way it disrupts or corrupts a little different but still kind of the same. watched a cool David Byrne video of an old talking Heads song: Houses in Motion. Will link below. I remember Tina Weymouth, Byrne's former band mate from The Heads saying of him, David Bowie and Brian Eno-"Those 3 are always the smartest in the room and they love talking to each other. One day I can picture them as old men talking amongst themselves ignoring everyone else in the room." well he does have white hair now...  I met and spoke to him after a Talking Heads show in Tucson back in the late 70's-indeed a bright and interesting guy. Heard he has Asperger's-seems about right.Have been busy working on new performance materials for shoes, athletic and protective gear lately. Good breakthrough on vibration damping/shock absorbing 3D moldable material-Visorb Life is good because it's life and trying to make the most of it with family and friends. Thankful for every day and moment which is full of new opportunities, experiences and memories 😀
