Holiday in the Sun

November 27th, 2017

Just got through first big holiday of the double whammy holiday season that has been my life for the last 30 years. Today is actually my 30th year anniversary of living in Taiwan. Not a big holiday fan do to the synthetic nature of holidays topped off by their usually being co-opted by commerce to pressure you into buying a lot of junk you don't need but are brainwashed into believing you must have. Like Mick Jagger sang in Satisfaction,"When I'm watchin' my tv and a man comes on and tells me how white my shirts can be." Actually this one wasn't so bad and even though traders have managed to hitch a big Black Friday wagon to the holiday the holiday itself is kind of nice-eat a nice meal with friends and family and think about reasons to be thankful for your existence on Planet Earth. I was actually invited by some Taiwanese friends to come and share a meal with them that had turkey but also Szchuan Dan Dan noodles. I served as the Thanksgiving expert due to my US citizenship and life there.

So I told the basic tale of the Pilgrims and Puritans and the friendly Indians that taught hem how to survive.Didn't want to throw a wet blanket on dinner and mention how the Europeans probably infected them with some nasty germs they had no antibodies for and probably killed off many of them until the rest did develop antibodies. Here's another song lyric from the Handsome Family that had some short-lived success doing the theme song for True Detective season 1; from Weightless Again,"Those poor lost Indians when the white man found them most died of TB, the rest went insane". Thanksgiving's vibe is very similar to the Chinese New Year's eve or圍爐 which literally means gathering oven-side to enjoy a meal together. Now to deal with Christmas, New Years and Chinese New year late this year due to the Lunar Calendar they follow which had 2 Lunar July's this year...I know it hurts your brain to think about it...

I’m Coming Out

September 27th, 2013

The whole blogging scene is so different than when I started this as audio podcast blog back in the last decade. Social media activity has taken over much of the energy and impact of blogging. It's still nice to have a dedicated site and curated space to call my own though. Still very pleased on the results I'm getting from the Pentax K 30 and in this case old M42 Pentax Super Takumar 55 1.8 lens. I've also made some adjustments to my BW processing in NIK Silver EFEX II which I'm very pleased with. To be honest I'm enjoying photography more and more. Hope the resulting work is enjoyable for you too.

We All Danced Together

March 5th, 2013

We All Danced Together
Some songs while not necessarily the a favorite or even a regular on your playlist still take on a significance of epic proportion in your life's soundtrack. They can serve as an instant reality check whenever you hear them. One such song is Lee Michaels-Do You Know What I Mean? Lee's song qualifies him for one hit wonder godlike status. There are so many great one hit wonder songs which pre-dated the current single song mp3 or streaming single of our music lives now. Some other one hit wonder favorites of mine are Clarence Carter-PatchesThe Chairmen of the Board-Give Me Just a Little More TimeFreda Payne-Band of Gold and Melanie-Candles in the Rain. There are many more and I will share some from time to time. I must confess I've always been lyrically deaf-meaning that I've always been sensitive to music and melody but always have had a difficult time hearing and absorbing lyrics. I will endeavor to listen to these classics with the intent of absorbing more of the composer's lyrical intention.

Staircase to Tomorrow

June 21st, 2009

The staircase that leads to tomorrowSun Moon Lake is one of my favorite spots in Taiwan. It's in the foothills of Taiwan's Central Mountain range so there is already a nice mountain drive to get there. It is also Taiwan's largest lake. The scenery is great and it is being enhanced (ruined) by progress (greed) daily. This site is promoted heavily to Southern Chinese tourists and there were plenty of them about chattering in Cantonese. I still enjoy the place and best to go on non-holiday or week day. In fact, I never noticed this staircase before. It is next to the scenic overlook of the lake and docks below, from the front of the WenWu Temple-the largest one at the lake. It was precisely because of some of the aforementioned tourists congregating over there with cameras in hand that I took notice. All the medalliions/trinkets on the railing are a prayer memorial that you purchase in the temple opposite. The temple is quite large and features classic Chinese styling and I'll feature shots from there in upcoming posts.

Google Map Flyover link here.

Update-Staircase Poem

It might have been night
With the world asleep
And in that crazy silence
It might have been I
Waiting on the staircase
For your footfall

The anklets or bangles
May have given you away
And would I have
Gladly taken

But it was past noon
When you wandered
Down my stairs
And I had to go

Many a verse have I written since
Many a long night have I spent
In reflection
But those were contemplations
Of afternoon
And perhaps
Now I still sit
And wait for your footfalls
On another staircase
But the banister
That separates us
Calls for evening

And I wonder
If there will be
Another night
Another staircase
But the same footfall
I ought to have heard
An eon ago
But didn't

Moshang-Stone Bell

November 10th, 2008

Yes it's true folks-Taiwan's favorite Sound Jeweler(from Capetown, SA) has a new musical work: Stone Bell. So new in fact that the mp3 is still wet so I couldn't listen at blog time 😀 . Jean (Moshang's off-stage name) asked me to use my photo above for his cover art so I said, "Yes!" How cool is that? Check out some song samples today and see what you think. Is it his typical excellent soothing jazzy chill beats? You be the judge.

Update: The thing rocks-especially "When You Come ft. C Dala & Nego Elias: wow-nice stuff. Good job Jean!
