I Have Seen the Future…

According to Me

Enigma Photos

…and it’s the Past! Wow just read an awesome multimedia post by Ian Rogers of YahooMusic on the state of the music industry and it’s viable future. Inspiring and a little overwhelming if you read it as I did in one breath. Even Lefsetz and I are on the same page on this one. Sure Ian is pimping YahooMusic’s place in the future kind of hard, but hey he is there and I think with his contribution and mindset it should only make it better.

On a related note, I feel confident that the future of music delivery will be some form of service that you pay a minimum monthly charge for like cable TV, maybe to your ISP adding a couple of bucks a month to the bill that content producers get to divide up. Why do we need archives any more cluttering up our hard drives? If you can get any song you want any time via stream isn’t that adequate?? Also if you need file copy ok for an additional charge of let’s say a dime($.10) you get a download which you can port to your mp3 player.

For a good example of quality streaming UI with ability to download files should desire(in this case a Creative Commons licensed free service) check out Jamendo.

RIP:Oscar Petersen

According to Me

Yeah, it’s not what we like to think about on Christmas but it’s reality. Oscar was a brilliant jazz pianist, played like he had 5 hands. All kinds of great jazz musicians and singers performed with Oscar. What can I say, the dude’s music touched my life. Please view this video in honor of a master musician.

Some music for the season…

According to Me

I couldn’t not post anything seasonal so I posted something good. These guys are talented and entertaining. Hope you enjoy. Happy Holidays to all.

From father to son…

According to Me

Just happened to swap out cd stack in car system. My son Kevin heard Gregory Isaacs playing and asked who he was. So I told him how he was kind of like Jamaica and Reggae music’s Marvin Gaye. Here’s some of Gregory live. What do you think?

Making money on music…

According to Me

The Long Tail reports on the success some websites in China are having monetizing music. Not through direct CD sales which everyone recognizes is as dead as yesterday’s news, but from other indirect methods including ring tones, and search. I and many others believe there is a model that will work for the artists and the listeners/fans that just hasn’t been discovered or more likely hasn’t been widely promoted yet.

Zep Rises from the Ashes…

According to Me

Just love the new media ability to capture stuff quickly and easily. Brilliant audio/video of course not but brilliant never the less. Great capture of some of the presence factor of iconic band.

Having a laugh …

According to Me

Cory

I used to love reading comic books when I was younger, haven’t been doing much of that lately. Found a good one today-satirical comic on one of the head dinosaurs of a big record conglomerate. Have a good laugh and wave goodbye to the old guard.

Here is another work following new emerging internet direct marketing model-artist to fan. Kristin Hersh of Throwing Muses and solo fame is helping establish CASH Music(Coalition of Artists & Stake Holders).

Kristin states, “Just to head off any potential confusion, CASH Music is not “me”, or “mine”. It’s a group of people that have built a framework that is not meant for any single artist. I’m only the first. Look for more artists soon. The next featured artist and a co-founder of the coalition is Donita Sparks. CASH will soon be open to any and all independent artists who want a set of tools to offer their music directly to their audience for collaboration as well as financial support.”

So if your an indie artist maybe take a stroll over there and see if it looks good for you. If your a music lover you can check out samples of music and purchase there too.

Snip Snip to RIAA Funding?

According to Me

Kr0n

Looks like EMI of music industry and Sex Pistol song fame has decided to pull on the purse springs of industry pit bull: RIAA, et al.

The IFPI said on Wednesday it was engaged in annual budget decisions and “as one would expect in this market, there is a focus on efficiencies and savings”.

It declined to give any further details but added that it was also engaged in a very full agenda to promote the rights of its member record companies.

EMI, Terra Firma, the BPI and RIAA were all unavailable to comment.

Hopefully these rocket scientists are catching on it’s bad business to sue the people that keep you employed or in this case, used to… Here is link for whole story.

Art of Mental Warfare

According to Me

ArtofMentalWarfare.com presents The Warning, a politically powerful new music video featuring Grammy Award-winning artist Trent Reznor. The Warning takes on the covert interests behind the war and our media saturated society. From war crimes to the destruction of the environment and a celebrity-obsessed culture, The Warning is a clarion call to action for an apathetic nation.

Check out video and site and think about some of the issues suggested and stated.

Feelin Trent, not Amazon

According to Me

Some irony here since Trent had lengthy rant on his blog re: Universal jerking him around as he strives to better interface with his fans and listeners without the participation of the music industry. I wanted to buy download album from Amazon but got the , sorry mp3 files only for sale to US customers. Hmm that’s not very consumer friendly. Especially for something like a music file that is so easily obtained for free via other download channels. Very impressed by the several hundred comments Trent has received from fans on his post. Not just the quantity-many are very interesting as well. Kudos Trent as you take a stand and try to go a different path.

Update: Successfully downloaded new NIN Year Zero Remix Album: Y34RZ3R0R3M1X3D and it is brilliant. Great to see what happens when Free Culture is nurtured. You can get Free Culture podcasts here.
