Juolan is a nice mountain town in central Taiwan. I visited there the day after Christmas with my friend Mr. Shao. He owns a nice little farm up in the hills where he grows persimmons and raises nice free range chickens. We always stop at the market to pick up some supplies before we hit [...]

Environ:A lost jazz loft space in NYC

by Mark Forman
Environ sketches by Brian Olewnick
Late in 1974, I started hearing about "Loft Jazz", mostly from posts by the Village Voice's Gary Giddins. The term evoked kind of a magical feeling- jazz that was "lofty" and ethereal. The names Environ, Ali's Alley, and Studio Rivbea all sounded much fresher and more intriguing than [...]

I mentioned last time how when I visited Chung Hsing University they were in the middle of their intra-school cheer leading competition. Here are some more shots of that. It was quite fun to be in the midst of with camera in hand. Here is the complete set you can view as a slide show.

One of my favorite places to walk is the Han Stream near my house. Taiwan is officially cycle crazy-even though I don't cycle much, "I'm loving it (no credit to McDonalds on that one either).

Relaxing in the cooler, fresher morning air stream side.

Setting his own pace he enjoys his walk gliding between shadows and sun rays...

Early birds

We've all heard that old adage a zillion times. Well I'm not about worm catching, but I'm all about catching the best light, having a peaceful relaxed walk while it's quiet and the air is less polluted. These girls seem to have some hot topic to share while they wait for their respective school buses.

Fashion Victim

It's hard sometimes keeping up with the latest fashions. Our hero's motto is: "Zero or Die." Haven't a clue as to what that means. Maybe caloric intake so he can keep his fashion physique? Fashion can be a bludgeon or it can be fun. Yes I think the multi-color foam hair is a bit much...

Sometimes you just feel…

Sometimes you just feel caged in....But even with the pressure or tension that it brings there is always some beauty to restore perspective and ride it out. Initially when I shared this image on Twitter James Neal responded:@BBluesman I know why the caged bird sings ... Maya Angelou. Since that is a book and a little [...]

Thumbnail image for Train in Vain:Vol.1

This series (Vol.2 to come soon) was shot at and around the TaiYuan Station of the Taiwan Railway line (nearest to my house). Playing by the railroad tracks is nothing new for me. In fact as a boy I often would go walking through Brooklyn College (next to my house) to get to the LIRR [...]

No I didn't stop and get any popcorn from Mrs. Redenbacker but did pretend to hear the pop of the imaginary flash bulb go off when I snapped her. Her business seemed to be good and I admire her industriousness for sure. This was off of main circle by the West Gate.

Not sure if this guy was [...]
